Letting Go: Freeing Yourself from the Weight of the Past

We’ve all heard the advice to “let it go.” It’s a phrase tossed around so casually that it’s easy to overlook its depth. Letting go isn’t about forgetting or ignoring the past—it’s about releasing the weight of the emotions and stories we carry, allowing us to move forward freely.

But what does it really mean to let go? And how do we know when it’s time?

Earlier this year, I was confronted with those very questions when a long-forgotten memory resurfaced—a memory I thought I had dealt with decades ago.


The Day My Suitcase Opened

In February, I was faced with an old memory that I had packed away in a suitcase, locked up, and stored deep within. Unexpectedly, that suitcase opened wide, spilling its contents. The hurt, the betrayal, the fear, the anger, the shame, the disappointment—all flooded in.

As my body and mind responded, I let the tears flow, allowed the vulnerability to surface, and accepted the emotions for what they were. That’s when I realized something staggering: I had been holding onto the weight of a past divorce for over 30 years, thinking I had dealt with it.

On that day, I saw what had been silently weighing me down. But the most incredible thing happened—I let it go.

I remember sharing my story with a trusted friend, telling her, “I’m sure I’ll need to do more work to heal.” Her response stopped me in my tracks: “No, you don’t.”

Her words were a revelation. Why do we so often believe that letting go requires endless work? Sometimes, it truly is as simple as surrendering. The weight I had carried for so long was finally gone, and with it came a sense of freedom I hadn’t realized I needed.


What Are You Holding Onto?

This experience made me wonder: How many of us are unknowingly carrying “suitcases” packed with unresolved pain, betrayal, or fear? How often do we resist opening them because we fear the flood of emotions that might follow?

The truth is, letting go doesn’t have to be complicated. It starts with:

  1. Acknowledgment: Recognize what you’ve been holding onto.
  2. Acceptance: Allow yourself to feel the emotions fully, without judgment or suppression.
  3. Surrender: Trust that the act of release is enough—no need to revisit or rehash it endlessly.

When you release what no longer serves you, you create space for new possibilities and a lighter, freer version of yourself.


Letting Go Is Not Forgetting

Letting go isn’t about denying what happened or pretending it didn’t hurt. It’s about releasing the grip of the past so it no longer defines your present.

Think about it this way: 

What would happen if you stopped carrying around that suitcase? 

How much more energy, joy, and creativity could you bring into your life if you were no longer weighed down?


Practical Steps to Let Go

  1. Identify Your Suitcase: Take a quiet moment to reflect on what might still be weighing you down. What unresolved emotions or memories surface?
  2. Feel Without Fear: Give yourself permission to feel the emotions without pushing them away or rationalizing them.
  3. Choose to Release: Whether through journaling, talking to someone you trust, or simply stating it out loud, declare your intention to let it go.
  4. Celebrate the Release: Acknowledge the courage it took to let go and celebrate the freedom you’ve created for yourself.

The Freedom of Surrender

When you let go of the stories and emotions that no longer serve you, you unlock a world of possibilities. The weight of the past loses its power, and you become free to fully embrace the present and step into the future with clarity and confidence.
